The Lord of the Rings. The Hildebrandt Bros.

It can be fascinating to examine fantasy or science fiction from the perspective of the era in which it was made. Few works have held the public interest as long or kept the public as interested as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, making it an ideal example for study. It is truly intriguing to see how Middle Earth has been portrayed in art over the decades. Among the first popular artists to focus on Tolkien’s work were the Brothers Hildebrandt. In addition, it’s easy to argue that their paintings represented not only many people’s introduction to fantasy art but it also, in many ways, represented how society and the artistic community viewed fantasy at the time. Similarly, John Howe, the concept artist for The Hobbit films, represents society’s present views of modern fantasy.
